Designing a wild poster for the first time can be a very nerve-racking and puzzling experience. It may seem like there is an endless number of design principles that you have to perfect before even getting started. However, design is all about learning and discovering your unique style. Design principles and right practices continue to transform each year. That’s why its important to just begin designing and you’ll learn the rest along the way. You may even be the one who transforms the current design principles.
To help you begin designing right away, here are 4 crucial tips. All you need to remember is “C.R.A.P” and of course what it stands for…
In design, C.R.A.P stands for contrast, repetition, alignment, and proximity.
Contrast
Contrast is the positioning of opposing elements in a design to highlight specific areas. Contrast can be achieved using colors, shapes, size, fonts, and type design. If you have a dark-colored poster background, then it is recommended to use light-colored text so that it can easily be seen. If you have a light-colored background, then dark-colored text will grab the most attention.
Repetition
Repetition ties items together and is used to create consistency in a design. Repetition can be attained using elements like color, size, texture, type design, and shape. Bullet points are an excellent example of repetition since recurring dots are used to display information.
Alignment
Alignment refers to the way each element is situated in a design and it can be used to create order. All elements in a design should have some sort of visual connection with each other. It is easier and more pleasing on the eyes to read paragraphs that are left aligned. If you desire to emphasize a title, then you could align it to the center.
Proximity
Proximity is used to establish if items are associated or not. If elements are grouped closely together then this shows that they are linked, and they convert to one visual unit instead of separate units. Proximity can be utilized to reduce clutter and organize information.
